IBM, Cisco to work on ASP venture

Armonk, N.Y--IBM Corp. and Cisco Systems, San Jose, Calif., announced Monday they will work together to serve the Application Service Provider (ASP) market. By committing to support the Cisco Hosted Applications Initiative, IBM will work closely with the network equipment manufacturer to build and test hosted applications offerings to ASPs. Hosted applications provide businesses access to software via the Web or dedicated phone lines. The alliance furthers IBM's commitment to network-centric computing, which poses a challenge to PC-centric computing, which fostered the rise of Microsoft Corp., Redmond, Wash.
