IBM, Compaq plug $100 million into Safeguard Scientifics

Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM Corp. and Houston-based Compaq Computer Corp. have jointly invested $100 million into Safeguard Scientifics Inc. Executives at Safeguard, a Wayne, Pa.-based venture capital firm, recently created a ruckus when they announced that the company would no longer invest in b-to-b e-commerce corporations, but only in Internet infrastructure companies. IBM and Compaq contributed $50 million each.
