IBM starts Web auction service aimed at transportation, travel companies

Armonk, N.Y.--IBM Corp. will begin building transactional auction sites for business-to-business and consumer transportation and travel companies. IBM's system will allow businesses to retain buyer data for future use in marketing initiatives. Travel sales on the Internet are projected to jump from $6 billion in 1999 to $20 billion next year, according to Internet travel consulting firm PhoCusWright Information Services, Sherman, Conn.
