IDC: Worldwide tablet shipments up 75% in Q4

Framingham, Mass.—Worldwide tablet shipments jumped 75.3% to 52.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2012, up from 29.9 million units in the year-earlier period, according to data from International Data Corp. Shipments in the fourth quarter were up 74.3% from 30.1 million in the third quarter. Apple's iPad led the market with 22.9 million units shipped in the fourth quarter, up 48.1% compared with the year-earlier period, IDC said. Apple had a 43.6% market share in the fourth quarter, IDC said. No. 2 vendor Samsung Electronics Co. shipped almost 8 million units in the fourth quarter, up 263% from the year-earlier period. Samsung had a 15.1% market share in the quarter, IDC said. Amazon.com shipped 6.0 million units in the fourth quarter, Asus shipped 3.1 million units and Barnes & Noble shipped 1.0 million units, IDC said.
