'Industry Standard' announces layoffs, appointments

San Francisco--On the heels of layoffs at the corporate parent of Red Herring, Standard Media International, publisher of The Industry Standard, on Monday announced it is cutting 36 jobs, or about 7% of its work force. The job cuts will come from the company's marketing, conferencing and online divisions. No editorial positions will be eliminated, a company spokeswoman said. At the same time, The Standard announced four executive appointments, including Ann-Marie McGowan, who was promoted from exec VP to COO; and Chris Patelis, formerly exec VP-COO of The Standard to president of The Industry Standard. The layoffs at arrive amid a retrenchment in ad spending on the so-called new economy magazines, as well as the nuking of at least two editorial products focusing on the Web.
