San Francisco—The Industry Standard, whose meteoric rise and dramatic fall symbolized the dot-com boom and bust was resurrected Monday by IDG as an online-only publication.

The site,, focuses on the online economy. It has three main components: news/analysis, a prediction market and people. Content is being provided by the IDG News Service and 50 bloggers. “There’s a whole new generation of people who don’t remember the original Standard [which folded in 2001],” said Derek Butcher, VP-general manager. “But through peers, there could be a percolation effect.”

Butcher added: “There seems to be a lot of interest. The key is to deliver high-quality analysis and the kinds of stories that the original Standard stood for and for what people remember.” Intel Corp. has agreed to sponsor the site in its first three months of operation, Butcher said. After that period, the site will be open to other advertisers.
