Intel introduces Atom processor

Santa Clara, Calif.—Intel Corp. unveiled the Intel Atom, a new processor designed specifically for mobile Internet devices and lower-cost, Internetcentric computers that will be rolled out from manufacturers later this year. The new chip architecture is designed for small, lower-power devices. Also, Intel announced the Centrino Atom processor, consisting of multiple chips to improve performance on mobile handheld devices.

Intel said the Intel Atom processor also has potential for future revenue opportunities in consumer electronic devices, embedded applications and thin clients.
