San Bruno, Calif.—E-mail security provider IronPort Systems announced on Wednesday that the company is now issuing free, real-time virus outbreak alerts by e-mail to IronPort users and anyone who signs up for the alerts at IronPort’s Web site.

IronPort sends the alerts from its Threat Operation Center through its Virus Outbreak Filters, which automatically protect IronPort users during a virus outbreak an average of 13.6 hours prior to traditional antivirus signatures becoming available, according to the company.

The alerts include a name for the virus and any relevant information on that virus. IronPort said that by increasing awareness of an outbreak at its earliest stages, it is able to alert companies before the virus can do any damage and save those companies both time and money.
