James Capo acted as a consultant to Cygnus Business Media as it developed an iPad app for Sustainable Construction, the first of about a dozen tablet apps the company has introduced since 2011. The work led to his post as director-digital business development for the company's public safety group, which includes Firehouse and EMS World. His mobile strategy includes both native apps and responsive design. The company's first mobile products, designed for the iPad market, featured content not available in print or on the Web. Cygnus is rolling out similar products for the Android market, and it is coupling those efforts with a move to responsive design. The company currently is relaunching its buyer's guides and websites using HTML5 technology, which enables a site to adapt its interface to match the diverse parameters of the mobile device market. “We see responsive design as the future for our website, with the apps as a complement,” Capo said. Cygnus recently completed the integration of its databases and has focused on developing back-end systems that power ROI for advertising clients and also inform internal decisions. “Our integrated database gives us the opportunity to create new products and services based off the audience data that we're collecting,” he said. Those opportunities include new social media programs that give readers an incentive to share advertisements, as well as custom marketing opportunities.
