Social influence company Klout Inc. has had to step back from its aggressive growth strategy after facing a privacy backlash, says Keith Dawson, senior editor of the CMO Site blog. Some of Klout's recent changes included looking up all the Facebook Friends of each user who had a Klout account and (based on information in public profiles and public postings) assigning these unaware Facebook users a Klout score while enrolling them all in Klout. Dawson cites a number of other privacy concerns with Klout, which may serve as an example about the danger of going, or being perceived as going, too far in tracking personal information on the Internet.
