“The recession taught us all to look at everything more closely,” said Mary Dworin, marketing director, George Little Management. “We sat down and asked associations how we could help them. Those deep partnerships really moved the needle for us.”
“It was the best show of the year for me,” said J. Steven Fearnley, president of J.S. Fearnley. “For the past couple of years, business has been down because of the economy; but with things bouncing back, people wanted to stock [up] for the holiday buying season. Coupled with the growing Asian market—that's why the show did so well.”
Organizers attributed the growth of the event to a resurgence of interest in the antiques marketplace, combined with strategic decisions that moved the show to a more centralized location and deepened association relationships. “Multiple factors played a role,” Dworin said. The show has enjoyed a 90% renewal rate each year, leaving little room for food and beverage. A post-show survey indicated that exhibitors are interested in educational sessions, something organizers will work with associations to add to the mix next year, Dworin said.
