LinkedIn: Newspaper industry shrinks at fastest rate

Published on .

San Francisco—The newspaper industry, which has seen its jobs decline by 28.4% between 2007 and last year, has grown smaller faster than any other sector tracked by LinkedIn, according to a post on the LinkedIn blog by Scott Nicholson, senior data scientist at the social media company. These statistics, which were gathered by analyzing the changing job titles of LinkedIn users, were part of the Council of Economic Advisors “Economic Report of the President.” While LinkedIn's data showed newspapers in decline, it also indicated that other areas of journalism were growing. The number of jobs in online publishing increased 24.3% between 2007 and last year, and Internet jobs increased 24.6%.
