New York—The number of magazines launched was down this year, but so was the number of magazines closed, according to MediaFinder, an online database of U.S. and Canadian publications. In 2013, 185 magazines were launched, down 18.5% from 227 magazines last year, while only 56 magazines closed, a 31.7% decrease from 82 magazines last year, MediaFinder said. In the fourth quarter, 47 new magazines made their debut, almost equaling the 46 launches in last year's fourth quarter.
Eleven magazines were shuttered in the fourth quarter, declining 47.6% from 21 in the same period last year. In the b-to-b magazine sector, 20 new titles launched this year, down 32% from 31 titles launched last year. The number of closures was down slightly to 14 titles from 16 in 2012. Only three new b-to-b magazines were launched in the fourth quarter of this year, down from six in the same period last year. Three b-to-b magazines closed in this year's fourth quarter, compared with four in the same period last year.
