Major ISPs announce best practices for e-mail

Published on .

Sunnyvale, Calif.—The Anti-Spam Technical Alliance, a 14-month-old group that includes Yahoo!, Microsoft Corp., Earthlink and America Online, Tuesday released a best practices document for the industry.

The document is the result of more than a year of collaboration among the competing Internet service providers.

The recommendations focus on two issues: helping solve e-mail forgery by eliminating so-called domain "spoofing" through the use of Internet Protocol-based and signature-based solutions, and best practices to prevent ISPs and customers from being sources of spam.

The ASTA document has been published on the Web sites of each participating ISP.
