New York—McGraw-Hill Cos. reported Thursday that third-quarter revenue increased 5.8% from a year earlier to $1.7 billion. Income from continuing operations grew 12.2% to $324.5 million.

"Record results in financial services, improvement in higher education, a pickup in advertising and careful cost controls all contributed to our third-quarter performance," Harold McGraw III, chairman-president-CEO, said in a statement.

Revenue from McGraw-Hill’s b-to-b group, which includes AviationWeek & Space Technology and Architectural Record, increased 6.2% to $160.7 million, even though BusinessWeek’s ad pages were down 11.2% for the third quarter, according to Publishers Information Bureau figures.
