Melissa Data urges mailing industry to clean address files

Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.--Software data cleansing provider Melissa Data today urged the mailing industry to clean address files in order to qualify for postal discounts. The recommendation comes in response to the United States Postal Service's enforcement of a rule that requires businesses to update their databases addresses every six months to avoid returned mail, a problem that costs the USPS more than $1.5 billion a year. Melissa Data, which provides data services that include the National Change of Address service, indicated new postal audits than began in the southeast U.S. are expected to expand to other parts of the country. Not suprising in light of the $285 million loss through April this year the USPS recently reported.
