Merrill's tech banking chief bolts to Thomas Weisel

New York--Mark Shafir, Merrill Lynch & Co.'s technology investment banking chief, has left and joined San Francisco-based Thomas Weisel Partners, as co-chief of mergers and investment banking, according to Bloomberg News. Merrill in turn hired Joseph Schell, formerly head of investment banking at San Francisco-based Nationsbanc Montgomery Securities, to replace Mr. Shafir. Thomas Weisel is an investment boutique that is gaining a reputation for high-tech prowess. Merrill, meanwhile, is forging ahead with plans to hire up to 30 investment bankers for its technology investment banking department.
