MetLife files for $6.5 billion IPO

New York--Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. has filed preliminary papers with the Securities and Exchange Commission to raise as much as $6.5 billion in an initial public offering, potentially the largest IPO in history. Metropolitan Life, which offers an extensive line of defined contribution and business insurance products, is one of the largest business-to-business insurance marketers. Metropolitan Life earlier this year announced plans to convert from a mutual life insurance company to a stock life insurance company.
