Microsoft posts software fixes

Published on .

Redmond, Wash. -- In response to privacy concerns regarding its Windows 98 online registration process, Microsoft Corp. Thursday posted on its Web site two downloadable software fixes that will prevent hardware identification numbers from being recognized in Office 97 documents. It is believed that the ID numbers can be used to trace electronic document authorship. One software tool prevents the ID numbers from being included in future documents; the other removes the ID from previously created documents.
