Los Angeles—Microsoft Corp. unveiled Surface, a new line of tablet computers designed to rival the Apple iPad and other tablets, at a press event Monday. “We want to give Windows 8 its own companion hardware innovations,” said Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, at the event. Two models of Surface will initially be available: one with an ARM processor running Windows RT (a mobile operating system designed for tablets); and one with a third-generation Intel Core processor running Windows 8 Pro. The Surface weighs 1.3 pounds and features a “kickstand,” a built-in stand that props the tablet up for easier reading. Surface with Windows RT will be available on the Windows 8 release date, expected in October, and Surface with Windows 8 Pro will be available about 90 days later, according to Microsoft.
