Motorola may acquire General Instrument

Schaumburg, Ill.--Motorola has begun talks to acquire General Instrument Corp., Horsham, Pa., according to published reports. The acquisition would give Motorola greatly expanded reach into the hot broadband marketplace. Under the terms of the pact, General Instrument shareholders would get slightly more than half a Motorola share for each of their common shares of General Instrument. The Wall Street Journal valued the acquisition at close to $10 billion.
