Motorola to cut 4,000 jobs

Schaumburg, Ill.--Motorola Inc. said Friday its plans to eliminate about 4,000 positions within its Networks Sector. Units affected are: the Commercial, Government and Industrial Solutions Sector; the Global Telecommunications Solutions Sector and the Broadband Communications Sector. Motorola expects to record a charge against first- and second-quarter earnings, reflected as a special item. In a statement, Edward D. Breen, president of Motorola's Networks Sector, said the cuts were necessary in order to remain competitive in a slowing economy. Since December, Motorola has announced plans to eliminate 22,000 positions through a combination of internal restructuring and divestitures of some operations from a global work force of 147,000.
