Penton Media has promoted David Blansfield to group publisher of the company's business technology and aviation groups. He was formerly group publisher of the business technology group.

Dow Jones' `WSJ' promotes Abernathy to senior VP

Dow Jones & Co.'s The Wall Street Journal announced the promotion of Penny Abernathy to senior VP-international and development. She was previously VP-planning and business development. Also, Richard J. Tofel, who was VP-assistant publisher of the WSJ, left Dow Jones Oct. 15 to become president of the International Freedom Center, constructed on the site of the former World Trade Center in New York.

Advanstar hires publisher of `Travel Agent Magazine'

Advanstar Communications named Jim Alkon editor-publisher of Travel Agent Magazine. Alkon was formerly group publisher-senior VP at Access Intelligence, where he ran the company's Dynamic Media Group. He previously served as editor in chief of Tour & Travel News and Business Travel News.

American Lawyer Media taps VP-national advertising

American Lawyer Media has hired Gary Mirkin as VP-national advertising. Mirkin is responsible for advertising sales for ALM's national publications as well as the company's national law firm marketing programs. Mirkin was previously associate publisher at Future Network USA.

`Computerworld' names Pinsky VP-online sales

International Data Group's Computerworld announced that Gregg Pinsky has been promoted to VP-online sales and operations. He was formerly national director of the online division.

Cygnus promotes Nadler to exec VP, Bowers to group VP

Cygnus Publishing, a division of Cygnus Business Media, announced the promotion of Pat Nadler to exec VP, from group-VP; he will direct operations for 19 publications. Also, Paul Bowers was promoted to group-VP, from group publisher.
