`Variety' announces president-publisher Koones will step down

Charlie Koones will resign in March as president-publisher of Variety, the entertainment trade paper said last month. Koones said the split is amicable and that he hopes to raise venture capital to pursue unspecified opportunities in media. Neil Stiles, division managing director for parent company Reed Business Information, will succeed Koones, who is also in charge of the entertainment group at Reed.

Penton Media promotes Linder to senior VP

Penton Media announced that Fred Linder, formerly president of Penton's New Hope Media Group, has been promoted to senior VP and will lead an expanded product group that will include all Penton events, trade shows and conferences. The group will introduce a new Health Foods International show in June. Alan Peterson, current head of New Hope Events, will be in charge of event management. Margaret Pederson, president of the exhibitions group, will leave the company in April after assisting in the transition.

Conde Nast Media Group taps Howard as VP-interactive

Lisa Ryan Howard has been named VP-interactive at Conde Nast Media Group. She will oversee digital sales and marketing across all Conde Nast publications and properties. Howard was previously publisher of CondeNet's Style.com and Men.Style.com.

Fortune/Money group appoints marketing directors

Time Inc.'s Fortune/Money Group announced the appointments of marketing directors for Fortune, FSB: Fortune Small Business and Money. All the titles are newly created. Mary Gallatin has been named global marketing director of Fortune. She was most recently executive director of marketing services at Dow Jones & Co. Yodit Teklemariam has been named marketing director of FSB: Fortune Small Business after previously serving as a director of integrated marketing at the Fortune/Money Group. Susie Bidel has been named marketing director of Money after serving for the last six years as brand development director for FSB: Fortune Small Business.
