Published on .

Arlington, Va.—The number of people who visited newspaper Web sites rose 5.3% in the first quarter compared with the same period in 2006, according to a report released Monday by the Newspaper Association of America.

Analysis conducted by Nielsen//NetRatings on behalf of the NAA showed that roughly 59 million people visited newspaper Web sites in the first quarter compared with 56 million during last year’s first quarter. The figure was the highest for any quarter since NAA began tracking the data in 2004.

The NAA said people spent an average of 45 minutes per month during the first quarter visiting newspaper Web sites, an 11.5% increase from the same period last year.
