Top achievements of 2008: In March, Stiles succeeded Charlie Koones as head of the Variety Group, which includes Variety, Daily Variety, Daily Variety Gotham, Variety.com, Video Business and Tradeshow Week. Before joining the Variety Group, Stiles was division managing director of Reed Business Information-UK, where he managed a portfolio of more than two dozen brands. Stiles said that in his new job he has been working on "attracting top talent to the Variety Group, putting in place metrics across the whole business so that we know why things work when they do, continuing growth—especially in the online area—and refocusing our online strategy." One new online product, Variety411.com, a national directory of film crew, equipment and location services companies, debuted in August.
Top priorities for 2009: In his first full year with Variety Group, Stiles said, his priorities will include building paid information services that help industry members perform their jobs, continuing to build online businesses and developing a wider array of revenue streams.
