Newspaper advertising expenditures up 5.7%

Newspaper advertising expenditures reached $10.8 billion in the first quarter, an increase of 5.7% over the year-earlier period, according to figures released by the Newspaper Association of America, Vienna, Va. A key element of the surge was national advertising, which reached $1.8 billion, a gain of 18.7% and the largest quarterly percentage gain since 1983. Another key growth area was recruitment advertising, which grew 11.7% to $2 billion in the first quarter.
