Newspapers' online traffic grows

Published on .

Arlington, Va. —Average monthly unique audience figures for newspaper Web sites grew by nearly 7.3 million in 2008 to 67.3 million visitors, an increase of 12.1% over 2007, according to a new report by Nielsen Online for the Newspaper Association of America.

As a whole, however, newspapers are having difficulty making their online advertising revenue match the growth in online visitors. The NAA said there have been improvements in online revenue as a partnership with Yahoo has enabled several newspapers, including the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, to sell more than $1 million of Yahoo inventory. —Sean Callahan
