Nielsen//NetRatings reports surge in online travel advertising

New York--Online travel advertising surged 39% in the third quarter of 2002 from the same period last year, according to Nielsen//NetRatings Inc.

Online travel advertising is now the fourth-largest online advertising category, making up 6% of all online ad impressions, according to the research company.

The largest online advertising category in the third quarter was retail goods and services, making up 30% of all online ad impressions, followed by financial services (19%) and Web media (14%).

Other category leaders in online advertising included hardware and electronics, telecommunications and consumer goods, each of which captured 5% of total online ad impressions in the third quarter.

Travelocity, which is owned by Sabre Holdings Inc. led the list of top travel advertisers in the third quarter, with nearly 4.2 billion ad impressions.
