The new service will debut in the fourth quarter.
Digital Media Universe will expand the scope of services now tracked by Nielsen/NetRatings from Web traffic to a full range of Internet applications, including AOL proprietary channels, instant messaging, media players, Web-enabled phones and wireless content.
Nielsen/NetRatings said Digital Media Universe will increase coverage of the number of people who use Internet applications residing on the desktop, but do not use the Web, by 7%. This will give marketers more accurate data to plan integrated media campaigns, the company said.
Applications that will be tracked by Digital Media Universe include RealOne media player, CallWave Web phone and AvantGo wireless content.
