Online newspaper ads grow 35% in first quarter

Vienna, Va.—Ad expenditures for newspaper Web sites grew 35% to $613 million in the first quarter, from $455 million in the same period last year, according to figures released Friday by the Newspaper Association of America. Print and online expenditures together totaled $11.1 billion for the first quarter, a 1.1% increase from $10.9 billion a year earlier. Spending for print ads totaled $10.5 billion, up just 0.3% from a year earlier. Among print categories, classified advertising was up 4.7%, to $3.8 billion; retail was down 1%, to $4.8 billion; and national advertising was down 4.8%, to $1.7 billion.
