March 6 New York—Online search in the U.S. increased 39% in January to 5.7 billion searches conducted, up from 4.1 billion searches in the year-earlier period, according to Nielsen//NetRatings.
The research was conducted across about 60 search engines. Google claimed a 48.2% share of those searches, while Yahoo! and MSN had 22.2% and 11.0% shares, respectively. Those numbers were flat year over year.
“Web users are conducting more searches not because they can’t find what they’re looking for, but because search as a utility has become deeply ingrained into people’s everyday lives,” said Ken Cassar, chief analyst at Nielsen//NetRatings, in a statement.
