English said the question for the panel and the media/information industry is: “How do you take this ubiquitous, worldwide supply chain into a real business? If there's any heartening fact to take away from this session, it's that there's no single, right model for success.”
John Suhler, co-founder and general partner of Veronis Suhler Stevenson, attended the session and said in an interview afterward, “New media, which is more of a one-to-one relationship than one-to-many, is attracting advertising investment because there's a higher level of engagement.”
Because editorial “is managed by marketing in a b-to-b environment, it's focused where the dollars are, as opposed to being focused on readers,” he added. In contrast, “new media are all about the end-user,” he said.
Suhler advocated a return to the paid-subscription model in b-to-b media because “it's a measure of engagement and renewability.” M
