Packexpo.com goes parts route

Published on .

Packexpo.com has disclosed plans to build a b-to-b trading exchange specifically focused on parts for the $1 billion packaging equipment parts industry, called Parts Purchasing Exchange. The move is interesting because Packexpo.com's primary business objective is to create an exchange for the $450 billion business of managing the Internet sale of packing products by suppliers to corporate buyers. Its move to provide a supplier service -- PPX is designed to minimize the amount of downtime suppliers will have when a machine breaks -- suggests that b-to-b exchanges will extend services underneath their primary business model. Packexpo.com, Falls Church, Va., is one of the more robust b-to-b exchanges to date, with 5,300 companies listing 100,000 products.
