Penton Media to shut down Connected Planet website

By Published on .

Chicago—Penton Media plans to shut down ConnectedPlanetOnline.com, its website serving the telecommunications industry. The website is the successor to Telephony and TelephonyOnline.com, both of which were discontinued by Penton in 2009.

"We tried for some time but it never achieved an appropriate revenue model," said Warren Bimblick, Penton's senior VP-strategy and business development.

ConnectedPlanetOnline.com currently produces a custom print publication, Insight, for Tellabs Inc. George Stenitzer, VP-corporate marketing and communications at Tellabs, said the next issue of the publication will appear in January.

Stenitzer said Tellabs plans to continue publishing the magazine but was unsure if Penton would continue to produce it in the future. He said he was told ConnectedPlanetOnline.com would not continue to update its list, which is the basis of the Insight mailing list.

“It's kind of the end of an era, because as long as I've been in this business Telephony had been the No. 1 (telecommunications media) brand in North America,” Stenitzer said.
