Arlington, Va.—Mobile devices are beginning to change the way news is being consumed in the U.S., according “The State of the News Media 2012,” a report from the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism. Identifying major trends in news consumption, the report noted that mobile devices increased traffic on major newspaper websites by an average 9%, according to comScore data.
But even with this increase in mobile traffic, newspaper readership declined 4% last year compared with 2010, according to the report. Additionally, newspaper revenue from subscriptions and advertising fell 7.3% in the same time frame.
The report, however, found that news brands are strong, with 36% of readers getting their news from visiting branded news sites directly. Another 32% of readers use keyword search to find news stories, and 32% also use a news organizing website or app. Just 9% find news through referrals from Facebook or Twitter.
Pew Research derived this information from a phone survey conducted in January of more than 3,000 people.
