New York—Business publication ad pages surged in May, according to the Publishers Information Bureau figures released Tuesday by the Magazine Publishers of America. Fortune led the way with a 79.6% increase in ad pages in May 2004 compared with May 2003. BusinessWeek (44.3%), Forbes (27.0%) and The Economist (11.6%) were also up in ad pages in May compared with May 2003. Year-to-date, the four bellwether publications all have posted ad-page gains: Forbes (19.7%), Fortune (18.5%), BusinessWeek (12.8%) and The Economist (10.1%). Overall, PIB figures showed that May ad pages in magazines tracked by the MPA increased 4.8% over May 2003. Year-to-date, ad pages are essentially flat.
