President signs do-not-call legislation

Published on .

Washington, D.C.--President Bush signed new legislation on Monday that affirms the Federal Trade Commission's authority to create and enforce the national do-not-call registry following a week of court rulings against the registry.

Separately, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell issued a statement Monday saying, "The FCC will enforce its do-not-call rules against telemarketers that have obtained the do-not-call list for the FTC beginning Wednesday."

The Direct Marketing Association has asked its members to comply with the FCC list.
