New York--Primedia Inc. has consolidated the editorial staffs of Telephony, Wireless Review
and Global Telephony,
in the process firing most of the editorial staffers at Wireless Review
and Global Telephony.
The combined editorial staff, made up mostly of Telephony
personnel, will now write for all three publications, said Jason Myers, the new editorial director for all three magazines and formerly editorial director of Telephony.
The decision was driven by economic considerations, Myers said, declining to provide further comment. Primedia, like its competitors, is reeling from a plunge in advertising. In late September, the company said earnings for this year would be lower than expected because of the terrorist attacks and the grim advertising climate.Karen Garrison, Primedia's VP-corporate communications, declined to say how many editorial staffers were fired. "There were a handful of people who were affected," she said. "This reorganization is creating a superior infrastructure designed to deliver superior products." Rhonda Wickham, former editor in chief of Wireless Review,
is staying on as editor-at-large of the publication. John Williamson is being retained as Global Telephony's
senior technology editor. Darren Sextro, formerly publisher of Wireless Review,
has been retained as associate publisher of all three magazines.Primedia is attempting to raise much-needed cash; last month, it announced it would sell its Bacon's Information unit to Stockholm-based Oberserver AB for $90 million.
