Instant messaging spam, or "SPIM," is expected to grow from 1.2 billion messages by the end of 2004 to 17.9 billion messages in 2008, according to the Radicati Group’s bimonthly "Radicati Market Stats & Industry Commentary" report, released Wednesday. Radicati attributes the projected growth to the sharp increase in published IM names in corporate and public directories, as well as the growing number of IM users. Radicati also indicated that spam traffic grew to close to 38 billion messages a day in 2004, comprising about half of all worldwide e-mail traffic.
