Framingham, Mass.—Worldwide smartphone shipments are expected to surpass 1 billion units this year, up 39.3% from last year, according to International Data Corp.'s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. By 2017, total smartphone shipments are expected to approach 1.7 billion units, resulting in a compound annual growth rate of 18.4% from this year through 2017.
In North America, IDC projects that 151 million smartphones will be shipped this year and forecasts 189 million units will be shipped in 2017, for a CAGR of 7.8%.
IDC predicts that global smartphone market share will slip over the next five years in North America (from 15.0% this year to 11.2% in 2017) and Europe (from 18.0% this year to 15.5% in 2017), hold steady in Latin America and the Middle East and Africa, and increase in the No. 1 smartphone market, Asia/Pacific (from 52.3% this year to 58.5%in 2017).
