Oakland, Calif.--Market research firm Clean Edge Inc. said Wednesday that it has issued a report identifying five major opportunities for businesses in the energy markets. Clean Edge, which provides consulting services to companies participating in clean-energy efforts, said Web services for running energy-efficient appliances, buildings and vehicles will become widespread in coming years. Companies should look at how they can play a part in the manufacturing, storage and transportation of hydrogen, the report said. Large-scale solar-cell manufacturing will finally take off, as solar products get their first clear shot at mass commercialization, Clean Edge predicted. It recommended companies take a hard look at how they can play a part in making fuel cells smaller. The report appears just as the Bush administration abandons an eight-year, $1.5 billion program to produce fuel-efficient cars in order to pursue initiatives to develop hydrogen fuel-cell powered vehicles.
