Retail exchange tabs Ariba, partners

Published on .

Mountain View, Calif.--The Worldwide Retail Exchange announced Thursday it has selected IBM Corp., i2 Technologies Inc. and Ariba Inc. to build its online marketplace. The exchange is one of the most closely watched b-to-b launches, led by Target Corp., Kmart Corp., Safeway Inc., Walgreen Co. and others. It competes with GlobalNetExchange, formed by Sears and its technology partner, Oracle Corp. Because the Sears exchange teamed with Oracle, it's not surprising the Worldwide Retail Exchange looked elsewhere. IBM, i2 and Ariba reportedly beat out a teaming of Commerce One Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Andersen Consulting for the deal, as well as others under consideration.
