SBC announces EDI breakthrough

Published on .

San Antonio--SBC Communications Inc., the parent of Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. and Ameritech Corp., said Tuesday that its Sterling Commerce Inc. subsidiary, Dublin, Ohio, has created a bridge between old-fashioned electronic data interchange applications and extensible markup language applications used on the Web. To demonstrate the technique, Sterling has launched Sterlingcommerce.net-a site capable of taking EDI orders from an old-line company and translating them to XML for another Web-centric enterprise. SBC said Sterling is using its own EDI expertise as well as software applications developed by Commerce One Inc., Pleasanton, Calif., which is currently holding its user conference in New Orleans.
