Senate approves anti-spam bill

Published on .

Washington, D.C. -- As expected, the U.S. Senate Tuesday approved a nearly identical version of the CAN SPAM bill that was passed by the House of Representatives on Saturday.

Because of minor technical changes, the anti-spam bill must go to the House again for final approval.

"The House will now have to re-adopt that version, which is not expected to occur before Dec. 8," Gordon T. Hughes II, president-CEO of American Business Media, said in a statement.

Hughes said ABM is confident that major features of earlier drafts of the bill remain unchanged, including the provision that it will preempt state anti-spam laws and create one set of regulations regarding commercial e-mail.
