Producer comment: "The event is growing nicely for us," said Rick McConnell, VP of Hanley Wood Exhibitions. "We went from three shows to four shows in 2002. We had a 28% increase in attendance from the prior year. We're also looking into adding additional shows under the JLC franchise. This show has a very positive attendee-to-exhibitor ratio. There are lots of buyers on the show floor. It leads to lead generation and sales. The takeaway we heard again and again was that attendees were walking out with practical tips to implement in their business immediately. The remodeling boom across the country helps feed shows like this."
Exhibitor comment: "We're doing exhibits and demos at all four [JLC shows]," said Kathy Alpert, events specialist at Grace Construction Products. "We've been at the JLC shows for a number of years. We thought that the show was very successful. We had a pretty full audience and standing room only for the demos the sales reps were doing, and we had a lot of people asking good questions about our products."
Breakdown: Hanley Wood acquired Journal of Light Construction and JLC Live, its corresponding trade show, in October 2000 from Builderburg Group. The trade show was launched in 1997 as a complement to the print product. This year's JLC Live events were in Portland, Ore.; Anaheim, Calif.; Providence, R.I.; and Chicago. The fourth show will be held Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in the Pacific Northwest. McConnell said he expects the 2006 show in Anaheim, slated for May 16-20, will attract more than 3,000 attendees. -Carol Krol
