Producer comment: Although attendance dipped in the wake of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, said Art Ellis, group show director for VNU Expositions: "The commitment of the industry was apparent at Medtrade 2005, in spite of the concerns this industry faces in regards to regulatory and legislative issues."
Exhibitor comment: "The traffic was not what it was in previous years, but I can't draw a direct line to the hurricanes," said Dan Smith, VP of membership for the MED Group, Lubbock, Texas. "I thought the quality of the traffic was high, however. All the power brokers, leading manufacturers and providers, and legal and legislative people were there. It was a serious event, in terms of buying and educationally."
Breakdown: Two highlights of Medtrade 2005 were the opening kickoff party and the inaugural reimbursement conference. The welcoming reception included awards programs that previously had been separate events. In its new incarnation, it became a fund-raising event, with $5,000 contributed to the Atlanta-based Shepherd Center, a catastrophic care hospital The new daylong educational session on reimbursement attracted more than 300 registrants. A similar conference will be included in Medtrade Spring 2006, to be held in Las Vegas from March 21-23.
