Social network ad spending continues to climb

New York—Social networking continues to climb dramatically, according to research aggregator eMarketer, which said that by 2011 half of all adults online will use social networks.

Ad spending worldwide on online social networks totaled $1.2 billion this year, a 155% increase from 2006. In 2008, that number is expected to grow 75% to $2.1 billion.

According to eMarketer, as social networking matures, the ad methods used are becoming diversified to include such things as search, targeted display ads and widgets.
