CAN-SPAM compliance still low, study finds

Denver—The CAN-SPAM Act, the anti-spam law that went into effect in January 2004, did not have a significant effect in its first year, according to MX Logic, an e-mail security company.

Ninety-seven percent of unsolicited commercial e-mail delivered in 2004 failed to comply with the federal law, according to MX Logic, and spam represented 77% of all e-mail traffic monitored by MX Logic’s Threat Center during the year.

"While we applaud the intent of the CAN-SPAM Act, clearly it has had no meaningful impact on the unrelenting flow of spam that continues to clog the Internet and plague in-boxes," said Scott Chasin, CTO at MX Logic, in a statement.
