'Standard' lays off 17% of its staff

San Francisco--In yet another sign of the woes facing the so-called new economy titles, Standard Media International, publisher of The Industry Standard, said Wednesday it is laying off 69 people, or about 17% of its 400-plus employees. The cuts mark the second round of layoffs; in January, 36 people were fired. However, unlike the previous round, editorial was not spared from the latest cuts, losing 18 staffers. Employees were also let go from the marketing, online and conferencing divisions. Many publications covering the Internet economy have laid off employees in recent months and some have scaled back their publications.
